When you think of living in the desert, you don’t often think of colorful trailers full of creativity. Lorien Stern decided to do something different. She moved into a trailer on her family’s ground a few years ago. It had stood in that spot for over 20 years, amid scrap metal and rolls of old wire. Lorien knew the trailer would need updating, there was trash everywhere, both inside and out. The electrical system was no longer fit for purpose and the kitchen floor wasn’t in good condition. Even parts of the drywall needed mending. Lorien’s boyfriend and brother, who both work in construction, offered their assistance and they set about giving the trailer a makeover. They made use of junk materials that were lying around and went to Home Depot to get cheap materials. Lorien was on a budget, but she wanted a space that felt like home.
She wanted to have a bright space, a huge contrast to the red and sandy hues of the desert. That’s why she chose lime green sofas for the living room and installed plenty of plants. She also chose pieces from artists that she likes so she can live among them. Lorien’s mom worked on the curtains, and the coffee table was made from wood found in the junkyard of the property. The orange table and punctured chairs in the dining room actually come from IKEA, but somehow it has a retro feel. The fun doesn’t stop in the guestroom, the sofa bed is a Target buy, but Lorien designed the pillows. It took just four months to complete the project from start to finish, but Lorien proved that even when you don’t have a lot of money, you can have your dream home with some patience, creativity, and hard work.
The US has no shortage of bustling big cities that are full of life. When choosing where to visit, you may want to prioritize those that are the most sociable and welcoming. Below the best cities for socializing are listed, some of which may surprise you.
Chicago constantly ranks as one of the most sociable cities in America. Great for meeting new people, partying, and, of course, pizza. This may seem a surprising addition as it tops many more famous cities, such as Miami and New York, but its inclusion is definitely warranted. Chicago’s pedigree when it comes to food and drink, friendly people, and great nightlife make it one of the most enjoyable big cities to visit.
Illinois’s most populous city, Chicago has plenty of new and luxurious hotels which offer plenty to their guests. The Holland is a very advisable choice when visiting The Windy City for many reasons. As well as modern designer rooms that prioritize comfort, it is a buzzing social hub. The always busy bar and café offer a great chance to meet fellow patrons. Best of all, dorms start from as little as $44 per night.
Second on the list is Boston. The capital of Massachusetts shares many of the qualities that make Boston an ideal destination for socializing. The vibrant city has great options for eating as well as plenty of bars and clubs in which to live it up.
If Boston is at the top of your destination list, a great place to stay is the HI Boston hotel. With not only attractive accommodation, the HI Boston is perhaps better known for having an extremely busy social space. The bar offers the perfect place to start your evening adventures. Furthermore, the hotel’s location is smashing for newcomers. Situated very close to Boston Common and Chinatown, it’s a great starting place from which to get a taste of the city. Just like its Chicago counterpart, dorms can also be had starting at just $44 per night.
